About the Summer School

The 1st Asia-Pacific Combustion Institute Summer School — Fundamental Combustion Problems in Fires (APCISS-1) is to introduce intermediate graduate students, industrial researchers and practicing engineers to fundamental combustion problems applied to outdoor and structural fires. We expect this school to contribute to create and reinforce the collaboration bonds between different academic institutions and research groups in the Asia Pacific and South America.

Program

The school will have a theoretical track and a practical track. The theoretical track will consist of an introduction of fundamental combustion aspects applied to fires. Lectures will be given by highly recognized academics from leading world institutions.

The practical track will consist of lectures where applied fire safety topics will be delivered by leading scientists and practitioners, followed by workshop sessions were these topics will be applied. For this, students will be divided into two groups, Modeling and Experiments, carrying out hands-on session at the combustion and computer labs at UTFSM.

Scholarships

The event will provide scholarships for the students, considering accommodation, lunches, and access to the different academic and social activities. Students only need to arrange their travel to Valparaíso and their dinners.

Registration and selection for the scholarship will occur through the analysis of simplified curriculum and statement of reasons for interest in the event, with preference to graduate students. The participant will commit to present at the event a poster containing its own contribution in the combustion area. These will be presented in a poster session.


APPLICATIONS CLOSED

Target Audience

The main target audience for this school are postgraduate students from South America and the Asia Pacific region. Additionally, at least 10 places will be reserved to practicing engineers from South American companies. This will provide a direct interaction between students, academics and the industry. The practicing engineers will be selected from companies that provide financial support, or from government institutions that become involved with the school.

Site description

The APCISS-1 will be held in the Valparaiso-Viña del Mar metropolitan area, within 2 hours by road from the international airport of Santiago. The activities will be carried out at the Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María and at the hotel Novotel, which are high standard venues that will promote a strong interaction and network generation between students, the invited speakers and researchers.
